Do you have a boring corner somewhere in your home?

How many times have you walked into someone’s home and saw obvious improvement projects sort of half done?  Buying the latest tools was a lot of fun, but the actual work is guess what – like work.  People get in over their heads, and either don’t have the skills or time to finish.  So what do they do?  They buy more neat tools and start another project.  Well the same thing can happen with home decorating.  We see it all the time.  What are the most common things we see?

• Nothing on the windows.  No shades, no fabric no nothing.  Not every window requires a treatment, but most do.  We see homes for months if not years from the outside with nothing on the windows.  If it looks empty form the outside imagine what it looks like on the inside?

• We all hate to through things away, its human nature.  A terrible mistake is to hang on to something that is dated, worn or purchased for your college apartment and then decorate the rest of the room around it.

• Have you ever seen an all purple or pink room where everything must have that color?  In the search for everything purple, there can be some pretty interesting chotsky’s banded about.  Splashes of color are great, but floods – bad.

• Clutter bad – order good.  We went into a house that was on the market way longer than normal.  The seller wanted some advice and was thinking that changing out all the carpet for hardwood would help.  We took a look and no joke there were hundreds of potted plants and trees everywhere.  Couldn’t even see the floor.  Suffice it to say, carpet was not his problem.

• The last one well mention here has become more of an issue with the advent of open floor plans and grander spaces.  For a variety of reasons, so many of these rooms seem empty.  We have a solution for so many areas in a home that is one of the best designer’s secrets and it is so easy to do.

To start, you simply buy an inexpensive round particle board table at unfinished furniture stores or your local arts & crafts stores.  They are made specifically for this purpose.  You can also use an old junk end table and attach a round particle board top.  You shouldn’t care what it looks like because you are going to cover it with your favorite fabric made into a custom table skirt. 

Skirted tables are appropriate for your family room, living room, bedrooms and hallways/entranceways.  They can be used as a night stand, corner table or side table.  For a traditional look in any room, place a table in a corner with a chair next to it to create a seating area.  You can put a lamp and picture frames on the table.  Another nice look is to place large coffee table books on the table next to your chair.  They are quite versatile and there are endless fabrics to choose from at the Fabric Workroom .  Table skirts are a very inexpensive way to dress up your room and give it that “designer look”.
